Other people move right on into a single-family home. Which is the better choice? Well, that depends. Both single-family homes and townhouses have their advantages, and it's really up to you to decide what your preferences are.

Advantages of Single-Family Homes

Privacy 

In a single-family home, you don't share the building with anyone else. There are not even shared walls to worry about! Some homes are closer to the neighbors than others, but if you really want a secluded space, you can just buy a home that's further from the neighboring homes or surrounded by a privacy fence.

A Yard

At a townhouse, you typically have access to shared outdoor space, but it's not exactly your own yard. At a single-family home, you typically have your own yard. You can landscape it however you want, create a grilling space, and hang out outdoors whenever you want. If you are someone who likes the outdoors, then this is a huge advantage!

More Variety

There's simply more variety between single-family homes than there is between townhouses. Most townhouses have about the same layout, but you can find single-family homes with all sorts of different layouts. You can buy one with two bedrooms, or one with five. You can buy a single-story home or a two-story home. The options are nearly endless!

Advantages of Townhouses

Less Outdoor Maintenance

If you hate mowing the lawn and doing any sort of outdoor maintenance in general, then living in a townhouse might be for you. Generally, the HOA maintains the outside of the units and the landscaping. You only have to care for the interior of the home.

Shared Amenities

Most townhouse communities do offer a lot of nice, shared amenities that you may not be able to afford in a single-family home. They often have pools, community gyms, and even community gathering areas and coffee houses. If you really like meeting other people and living in a community setting, this may be a good option for you. You'll definitely stay busy, and you won't have to drive to the gym.

So, what sounds more appealing — a single-family home or a townhouse? There's no right or wrong answer here. It totally depends on what you prefer and what advantages you find most meaningful.
